September12-18

Our warm weather peaked this week, with highs in the 70’s throughout the week.  The fishing continued to be great, with plenty of fish being caught on flies and spin gear.  Fishing in front of the lodge picked up considerably towards the end of this week, and our main river fished outstanding.

September 19-25

The week of the 19th continued to produce fish at all of our locations, but the warm and dry weather started to take it’s toll on the numbers of fish entering our river.  Guests continued to catch a good number of fish in the river, but it wasn’t easy by any means.  The action continued to be outstanding right in front of the lodge, as well as on the flats.  Their is nothing like sight casting to tailing Coho in the salt, especially on a bright and calm sunny day.

September 26 – October 2nd

This was the final week of our 2011 season, and with the final week came a large storm that produced some much needed rain, and strong winds.  Luckily, we have plenty of location diversity here at Icy Bay Lodge, which allowed us to fish locations that were sheltered from the wind.  Once again everyone caught limits of Silvers, despite the nasty weather.

The sow and cub made another appearance, and some wolves and moose were also seen around the lodge.

The warm dry weather finally ceased, for a day, and the much needed rain brought more fish into Icy Bay.  The fishing has been progressively better as time has passed, and we are now catching fish all over the bay.  Limits of coho salmon are being caught regularly on all presentations, with most days of fishing ending with sore arms from catching, and big smiling faces.  Thirty fish days per person are now the norm. Wildlife has also been abundant, with multiple bear and wolf sightings this week.  One of the highlights of the week was watching a sow and her cub catch salmon right in the ocean surf at the mouth of one of the rivers.

Pink, Blue, and Orange have been the top colors for the week, but all flies have been extremely productive.

We now have an abundance of Coho entering the river systems in Icy Bay.  The only thing we need now is a little bit of rain to help bump the flows and give the fish some room to move up stream.  It’s been abnormally dry this month, and we have now went almost 2 weeks without any substantial rainfall.

Regardless of the low flows, we are still catching plenty of fish.  Landing 10 to 15 fish a day has been the norm for this week, with most of the fish caught subsurface on pink and black flies, but topwater action has also started to pick up on pink and chartreuse pollywogs.

This is the second year they have used Icy Bay Lodge to help them with their research, and we look forward to helping them in the future.
