Gearing Up

Awhile back we talked about the importance bringing the right clothing for your trip to Icy Bay Lodge, and what we recommend for your layers.  Today let’s talk about your fly fishing gear.

It starts with a good fly rod,  at Icy Bay we use Temple Fork Outfitter 8 Weights (TFO 08 90 4 TX).  Match it up with a good, durable reel, such as the Loop CLW, and you have a good foundation for success.  For most of the fly fishing we do here at Icy Bay most weight forward floating lines will do the trick.  I personally like the RIO Gold WF8F line.  This line makes casting streamers and polliwogs almost effortless.  It never hurts to have an extra spool of sinking tip line as well, but to be successful at Icy Bay Lodge, it’s not necessary.  We supply flies, leader, and tippet for our guests, but some people like to bring their own.  If that’s the case Rio Max tippet from 30-15 lb test for your leader.  Since no one else fishes these Coho runs bedsides our clients, these fish are not line shy.  We’ll tell you more about our flies in a future post.  Oh, and don’t forget your polarized glasses.

The last piece will be a good set of waders and boots that you feel comfortable in with your layers on underneath.  The last thing to do, if you haven’t already done so, is to reserve your dates for the 2010 season by contacting us today.  Spots are filling up fast.
